This beach is also touted as the "classic Hawaiian beach" by many touring agents and that is not without reason. In contrast to the gloss of Waikiki or other famous Hawaiian beaches, the Hapuna beach offers you a retreat to the lap of nature. To access the beach, first you have to make your way through the bushes and palm trees. And on the end of the road you are rewarded with the breathtaking views of a mile long stretch of pristine white sand beach lying in the lap of a large vista of calm, blue Pacific.
The dazzling white Hapuna beach is interspersed with green breaks created by laps of grassy area here and there along with scattered palm trees. Pronounced in the local language as Hah- poo- nah, this Big Island beach justifies the meaning of its name: "The spring that gives forth life".
Enjoying at Hapuna Beach
To keep with the Big Island specialty, Hapuna beach offers you a range of adventure activities. If your teenage daughter is too eager to experiment with body surfing, then Hapuna beach is the ideal place to begin with this sport. The comparatively calm sea offers moderate sea surfing. However, the crystal clear water in Hapuna beach makes it the ideal center for snorkeling. This beach is also great for swimming. However, if you want to spend the day with little relaxation, sun bathing in Hapuna beach is also a fabulous idea.
Just hanging around in the shore also promises great fun. Buy ice cream or snow cones from the beach stalls and stroll along the warm beach with delicious ice cream melting within your mouth.
The beach provides great facilities to the tourists. In Hapuna Beach, you will find covered pavilion areas and restrooms. So having a family picnic in Hapuna beach may turn out to be a great success. There's always a lifeguard stationed here. You can also rent snorkels and boogie boards right from the beach. Above all, this beach offers an excellent parking space, so even in the most crowded day; you will find some space for your poor car.
However, before you head off to Hapuna beach, here are a few tips for you:
- In weekends, the beach becomes too crowded. So it will be prudent to start a little early to secure the best picnic spot for your family.
- In summer, the ocean remain really calm and hence the sports like body surfing or boogie jumping are just fine for the amateurs. But in winter, all water sports including swimming should be tried by the professionals only.
- If you are not particularly afraid of strong oceanic winds, then stay back till afternoon. The strong afternoon wind leaves the beach nearly empty by afternoon, so staying back beyond that time may offer you a romantic and solitary experience of Pacific sunset.
