Many travel agents will actually try to make you believe that there are no beaches in Big Island worth visiting. But don’t believe them; they definitely lack in their aesthetic sense. The truth of the matter is: big Island has a lot of them- eighty is the exact number of beaches that Big Island actually boasts of. Even new ones join the list literally everyday and also routinely disappear.
Popular tourist guide books often differ in their opinion as to which of the two Big Island beaches- Hapuna or Kauna'oa- makes for the best beach in Big Island. But ask a tourist who has visited the both, will definitely give away the first position to the beautiful Kauna'oa.
The Kauna'oa beach is curved in a perfect crescent in the lap of deep blue pacific. The blue and white contrast creates the most spectacular scenery that explains this beach’s being voted "The best beach in the world" twice by Conde-Nash Traveler. The white beach meets with the sea in a gradual slope. The fine sand quality of the beach allows it stretch deep down to the sea and as a result, entry of the sea water to the beach becomes easier. Thus relaxing on the beach with waves waggling under your feet makes for a wonderful experience. Shady trees here and there and beautifully manicured landscaping provided by the Mauna Kea Resort add to the drama of the place.
On a sunny day, when the sky is blue and clear, you can catch the majestic outlines of the volcano, Mauna Kea in the South end. Because the beach is pretty long, it can accommodate a large number of tourists allowing enough room for everybody, though the entrance is restricted by the hotel to maintain the ocean environment.
The crystal clear water near the beach is too seductive to ignore. The beach makes for a protected cove where sea is fairly calm during the summer, thus turning it into a favorite destination for swimming and snorkeling. With sun and sand and plenty of shady trees, this beach is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Big Island.
The Kauna'oa beach is one of the white sand beaches in Big Island. Supported by Mauna Kea Hotel, this beautiful white beach is kissed with crystal clear pacific. As such Kauna'oa beach gives you wonderful snorkeling experiences. However for excellent snorkeling experience you have to keep to the left en of the beach.
