Enticing Lanai

Lanai can be your ideal gateway for escaping far from the madding crowd. For here in Lanai, the best attractions are solitude and quiet. With desolate wild beaches, unpaved roads, clear night sky blanketed with twinkling stars--- Lanai makes you feel at the garden of the Gods. Only this garden is quite different from other heavenly gardens; here uniquely sculpted rocky terrains replace the greenery and in place of the flower beds you will get to see Luahiwa Petroglyph Field where ancient rocks with prehistoric art painted on them astonish the common men and baffle the scientists. Its tidal waves invite the underwater marine life near the shores, including the variety of tropical fishes and above all the sharks.

In addition to the solitude, Lanai is famous for its spectacular beaches. Only thing is that, you will find no accommodation near the shore; most of staying places are located in Lanai town.

The beaches and the sea

The Hulopoe beach is undoubtedly the most popular place in Lanai. Calm pacific, laced with miles of wild beaches welcomes you in lanai where you can hear a unique music typical of the place created by the rumbling of ocean and the soft rustling sounds of palm trees. The clear transparent water has turned it into a popular snorkeling center.

The adjacent Manele Bay offers one of the most spectacular sites in Hawaii. It actually forms a marine life conservation area. Reward yourself with a boat ride to see the famous Puu Pehe or the Sweetheart Rock.

The Shipwreck Beach on the north shore of Lanai is another great beach. The beach is lined with corals that trapped and concluded the tragic destiny of a number of ships in the past. You can even find one of them still trapped there. This is also a favorite place of the snorkelers.

If marine life is your calling, then Polihua Beach can be your favorite place in Lanai, for it creates a spectacular picture during the breeding seasons of turtles that make the beach their homes for the entire season. You will find the waves here a little harsh, but the panoramic vista that you get to see is simply out of the world.

To keep with the rustic charm of the island, you will find only one city in this island---the Lanai city. The city was built in 1920 as a plantation town to support the growing pineapple industry. For most of the 20th century Lanai occupied the leading position in world pineapple plantation map. Thus the city earned the title ‘pineapple aisle’. With the fall of pineapple industry, today Lanai makes a quiet town with typical small town charms. One of the best things to do in Lanai city is to have a picnic under the pine trees at Dole Park.

Staying at Lanai

So far as accommodations are concerned, Lanai has two luxury resorts. If your budget is restrictive, then stay in the less expensive hotel in Lanai city. However, residents sometime offer rentals; you can try one of them for a novel experience.

However, Lanai is colder than other islands of Hawaii, as it rests on a height of 1700feet. In the warmest month the average temperature remains at 72º F. For added comfort, carry a light jacket with you.

This remote island is devoid any bus service. Hiking is the best way to explore the wild beauty of this sparsely populated island. Horse back riding is also an effective way of exploration. Another great way to see Lanai is through boat tours.

Come! Enjoy the virgin nature in Lanai; you will discover a place where reality becomes more exciting than fantasy.
